KITUI COUNTY| August 2, 2026

Kitui Central Member of Parliament Makali Mulu has officially declared his intention to vie for the Kitui County gubernatorial seat in the 2027 General Election, signaling the beginning of what is expected to be a competitive race for the county's top leadership position.

The announcement came as the legislator spent the day yesterday 1 August 2026 with residents across Kitui County while attending a series of funeral services, where he reaffirmed his commitment to serving the people and expressed his desire to extend his leadership beyond the constituency level.

Speaking during the burial ceremonies, Mulu said his decision to seek the governorship is driven by his vision of accelerating development across all parts of Kitui County. He noted that his years of experience in public service and leadership have prepared him to steer the county towards greater economic growth, improved infrastructure, enhanced healthcare, quality education, and better opportunities for young people and women.

Earlier in the day, the MP joined family members, relatives, friends, and residents in Kisayani, Mutomo–Kibwea Ward, Kitui South Constituency, to pay his last respects to the late Angelina Syokau. He later attended the burial of the late Melik Munyila Mbwang'a in the same ward, where he conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.

Addressing mourners, Mulu emphasized the importance of unity and compassion during moments of grief, assuring residents that leaders have a responsibility to stand with their communities in both joyful and difficult times.

"I stand with the people of Kitui South and the entire county during these moments of loss. My prayers are with the bereaved families, and I pray that God grants them strength, comfort, and peace as they mourn their loved ones," he said.

Before traveling to Kitui South, the legislator also attended the burial of the late mother of Hon. Waziri Bakari in Kitui Town, where he joined other leaders, family members, and mourners in celebrating her life and offering support to the grieving family.

Mulu's declaration to contest the gubernatorial seat comes as political activities continue to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 elections, with leaders beginning consultations and engagements with residents across the county. His announcement is expected to reshape the political landscape in Kitui, where succession politics has already started taking shape.

Supporters who accompanied the MP at the funeral gatherings welcomed his announcement, expressing confidence in his leadership record and describing him as a development-oriented leader capable of transforming the county. They cited his performance as Kitui South MP and his accessibility to residents as key reasons for backing his gubernatorial ambitions.

Political observers believe Mulu's entry into the race will add significant weight to the contest, given his long-standing experience in national leadership and his influence within Kitui County politics.

As he concluded his visits, the MP once again conveyed his sympathies to all the bereaved families and called on residents to remain united. He prayed for God's comfort upon those mourning and asked the people of Kitui County to continue embracing peace, solidarity, and mutual support and reflecting his continued engagement with residents while also marking the beginning of his campaign journey towards the 2027 Kitui gubernatorial election.
