President William Ruto has today led the nationwide disbursement of the second tranche of the NYOTA Business Start-up Capital programme, with more than 122,000 young entrepreneurs each receiving KSh 25,000 to support the growth and expansion of their businesses.
The launch was held at the Ulinzi Sports Complex and featured a first-of-its-kind live national broadcast that linked 18 simultaneous events across the country. Cabinet Secretaries and Principal Secretaries participated as live correspondents, while NYOTA beneficiaries shared testimonies on how the programme has impacted their businesses. The event was jointly carried live by more than eight media stations.
Speaking during the event, President Ruto said the initiative is aimed at empowering young entrepreneurs by providing them with the financial support needed to establish and grow sustainable enterprises, ultimately creating jobs and contributing to Kenya's economic development.
The Head of State also announced new measures to ease the cost of doing business for NYOTA beneficiaries. He directed the Intergovernmental Budget and Economic Council (IBEC), chaired by Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki, to develop a framework that will grant beneficiaries a two-year waiver on business license fees.
In addition, President Ruto directed Government Catalytic Funds, including the Youth Enterprise Development Fund, Women Enterprise Fund, Uwezo Fund and Kenya Industrial Estates, to develop financing products that will enable NYOTA beneficiaries to access additional capital and expand their businesses beyond the initial grant.
Representing the Council of Governors, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja announced that Nairobi County will introduce a zero-rated business license for NYOTA beneficiaries through the county's Unified Business License Platform. The move is expected to reduce the financial burden on young entrepreneurs and encourage business formalization.
President Ruto praised the beneficiaries for demonstrating strong entrepreneurial ambition and resilience, commending their commitment to building sustainable businesses that will drive economic growth and create employment opportunities across the country.
The NYOTA Business Start-up Capital programme is part of the government's broader strategy to tackle youth unemployment by supporting entrepreneurship through direct financial assistance and access to affordable financing.
