Ol Kalou, Kenya – Security has been significantly reinforced in Ol Kalou ahead of the highly anticipated parliamentary by-election, with more than 1,000 police officers deployed across the constituency to ensure a peaceful, free, and credible electoral process.
The deployment, announced by Inspector-General of Police Douglas Kanja, is part of an extensive security operation aimed at maintaining law and order before, during, and after polling day. The operation includes officers from the Kenya Police Service, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the Administration Police Service, and specialized anti-riot units.
Police have also positioned crowd-control equipment, including water cannons and patrol vehicles, at strategic locations within the constituency to respond swiftly to any security incidents that may arise.
Speaking ahead of the election, the Inspector-General assured residents that adequate security measures had been put in place to protect voters, election officials, political candidates, observers, and members of the public throughout the exercise.
He urged residents to remain peaceful and cooperate with security personnel, emphasizing that the National Police Service is committed to providing a safe environment that allows voters to exercise their democratic right without intimidation or disruption.
Authorities have warned against acts that could undermine the electoral process, including violence, voter intimidation, destruction of property, hate speech, and the spread of misinformation. The police said anyone found engaging in criminal activities would face the full force of the law.
The heightened security comes amid increased political activity in Ol Kalou, where candidates have intensified their campaigns in the final days leading to the by-election. The contest has attracted national attention, with senior political leaders campaigning for their respective candidates.
Election officials have also completed preparations for polling, including the distribution of election materials and deployment of personnel to polling stations across the constituency.
Security agencies say officers will remain on duty throughout the voting period, during the counting of ballots, and until the electoral process is concluded to ensure peace and stability.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has appealed to voters to turn out in large numbers, observe electoral laws, and conduct themselves peacefully. The commission has also urged political parties, candidates, supporters, and the public to respect the outcome of the democratic process and avoid actions that could trigger unrest.
Residents have welcomed the increased security presence, expressing hope that it will help guarantee a calm and orderly election. Local leaders have similarly called for peaceful participation, encouraging voters to exercise their constitutional right responsibly.
The Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election is expected to be closely watched, with security agencies maintaining that all necessary measures have been put in place to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process and protect lives and property.
The National Police Service has reiterated that its officers will remain impartial throughout the exercise, pledging to enforce the law fairly while ensuring every eligible voter is able to cast their ballot in a secure environment.
Ends.
