Former Tana River Woman Representative Rehema Hassan has called on the government to crack down on individuals who recruit, finance and use goons to perpetrate violence, saying both the perpetrators and their sponsors must be brought to justice.
Speaking during a public engagement, Rehema said the increasing use of hired gangs to intimidate opponents, disrupt public events and fuel unrest poses a serious threat to peace, security and the country's democratic values.
She urged law enforcement agencies to conduct thorough investigations and ensure that those who bankroll criminal groups are held accountable, arguing that arresting only the goons without pursuing their financiers would not solve the problem.
"The people who use goons and those who fund them should be arrested. Everyone involved in sponsoring violence must face the full force of the law," Rehema said.
The former Woman Representative stressed that no individual should be allowed to use violence as a political tool or to settle personal or political differences. She said leaders should promote peaceful dialogue and respect for the rule of law instead of encouraging acts that endanger innocent citizens.
Rehema further appealed to security agencies to act impartially and ensure justice is served regardless of the status or political affiliation of those implicated.
Her remarks come amid growing national concern over incidents of violence linked to organised groups in various parts of the country, with increasing calls for authorities to dismantle networks responsible for recruiting and financing such gangs.
She concluded by urging Kenyans to reject violence and work together to safeguard peace, saying lasting development can only be achieved in a secure and stable environment where the law is applied equally to all.
Ends.
